Case studies

Saleha, Yemen

Saleha is one of more than 4,600 children we currently serve in four places of education in Yemen, where more than half of the population don’t have enough to eat.

The presence of Mary’s Meals at her school has helped her focus on her love of learning, gaining the skills she needs to fulfil her ambitions, rather than the hunger she used to feel throughout the day.

She says: “I felt more encouraged to go to school after we started receiving the meals. I love school and I especially love that I am learning to read and write.”

For Saleha, the support from Mary’s Meals means she has enough energy to participate in school, and she can focus on learning to read and write and pursue even bigger dreams.

“I hope to be a doctor when I grow up. I want to help people.”

Emmanuel, Liberia

Mary’s Meals has supported Emmanuel, 15, as he has grown during his time attending Factory Camp School in Liberia.

He says: “Mary’s Meals’ school feeding programme has helped us to forget about hunger while at school.

“The food gives me strength to study, work and play. It gives us energy to stay in class, and even when I go home, I still have energy to do all my chores and study.”

With the promise of a school meal, Emmanuel’s focus moved from where his next meal would come from, to the future:

“The meal motivates me to be serious in my studies which is preparing me to be equipped to take on responsibility when I have acquired a good education.

“In the future, l would like to be a Minister of Health to craft and implement reformed health policies for effective and workable health programmes for our people.”

Ruth, Zambia

Ruth is one of more than 420,000 children who enjoy a serving of Mary’s Meals every school day in Zambia.

The nutritious bowls of porridge the Chigumu Primary School student receives means that she is able to focus on her education and dream of a bright future.

She says: “Every time I am in school, I enjoy Mary’s Meals porridge. The porridge gives me energy to participate in class. I can concentrate in class better after I eat my porridge.

“My favourite subject is English, and I hope that when I complete my secondary education, I can become a nurse.

“I enjoy being in school because of the lessons and the porridge that I eat with my friends. I also enjoy playing with a ball with my friends after class.”
